Jannis Kounellis

Bells (1993)

Jannis Kounellis 1993 work named ‘Bells’ exists wedged between two walls with three bells knotted around three separate beams which sit one on top of the other. Although the bells seem loose and free to chime they are all separately tightly fastened and silenced to there separate beam. The heaviness of the bells give the indication of gravity, pulling down the structure. The descending of these very spiritual objects which normally exist high and make noise to celebrate worship now are near to total collapse, tied down by the objects own weightiness and represents a real weakness to what these bells normally represent, soundless and static in its fall the bells which normally symbolize celebration and time no longer function.
