Shelia Hicks

“Pillar of Inquiry/Supple Column” is a piece by Shelia Hicks which is textile piece which consists of deconstructing/deforming thread created by spinning mill technique. The collection of material which is hung from the space creates a pillar like form which is manipulated by the artist, its pushed, pulled and compacted. By doing so Shelia Hicks releases the tension of the material which deconstructs it from the perfected thread and by doing so becomes something more unique. The artist has explained it as trying to find the personal version of something which is already perfected. It creates a uniqueness to the form, creating a tactile object which looks interacted with and played with. The manufactured material becomes open and wavy and makes the viewer want to hold and brush there body through the sculpture.
